Vanity cabinets: a stylish and practical bathroom centrepieceUnless you want a bathroom full of clutter (and who wants to face that first thing in the morning?) a vanity cabinet is an essential piece of bathroom furniture. Not only does it keep all your tooth brushes, deodorants, make-up bottles and razors out of sight behind closed doors, it can be a stylish centrepiece in your bathroom.
Vanity cabinets come in many shapes, sizes, colours and materials. Some will come with a wash basin already fitted, others will allow you to choose your own basin to fit on top. In other words, the only limits to your choice come from the size of your bathroom, your budget and the size of your imagination.
How to choose your vanity cabinet
Most home stores and bathroom specialists will sell vanity cabinets both in store and on their website. It is worth a browse around a store to get an idea of the sizes and styles available so you have an idea of what you are looking for. Make sure you take some measurements with you of the space in your bathroom you have in mind so you have a realistic expectation of which designs will be suitable for you. Vanity cabinets need to be in compliance with you basin and bathroom decor so make sure you have chosen the rest before you buy it. Also keep in mind the surrounding fixtures and fittings – you don’t want to find that you can’t open the bathroom door properly because your vanity cabinet is in the way!
A vanity cabinet needs to be in a proportionate size with the rest of your bathroom to look at home there. There are some slim-line designs available topped by a small wash basin, ideal for a guest bathroom which may not need much storage space. Alternatively, if you are lucky enough to have a cavernous master bathroom you could opt for a large, double basin cabinet offering acres of storage.
Vanity cabinets come in a variety of styles and materials
You don’t need to have a total bathroom refit to find a vanity cabinet which complements the rest of your bathroom furniture. They are available in a wide variety of styles and materials. Natural wood is traditional and looks beautiful, but can be expensive. MDF (medium density fibreboard) is a cheaper option and the laminate covering means it comes in a wide range of colours and wood effects. Ceramic is a classic and hard wearing option and glass can give a modern twist. If you are after something a little different to fit in with your bathroom style, there are plenty of eclectic designs and bright colours to catch your eye. The cabinets can be free standing or wall mounted, they can have curved lines or sharp corners, they can have single, double or even multiple cupboards and drawers.
Fitted wash basin or choose your own?
This is entirely your own choice. Many vanity cabinets come complete with a fitted wash basin. However, if you opt to choose your own basin make sure the vanity cabinet top is cut with a suitable space for your chosen basin and taps.
